California is ready to implement in 2012 the global climate policy called REDD, aimed at reducing emissions by halting rainforest destruction. California's Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 mandated greenhouse gas reductions, including participation in a regional cap-and-trade system. Global financial institutions are pushing market/financial incentives, including carbon credits, to implement this plan-more "green capitalism" (an oxymoron if there ever was one). Jeff Conant, the Communications Director of Global Justice Ecology Project will discuss REDD's emergence in California politics and its serious implications for human rights and ecological justice in the Global South.
Global Justice Ecology Project (GJEP) explores and exposes the intertwined root causes of social injustice, ecological destruction and economic domination. It aims to build bridges between social justice, environmental justice and ecological justice groups to strengthen their collective efforts. Within this framework, our programs focus on Indigenous Peoples' rights, protection of native forests and climate justice. We use the issue of climate change to demonstrate these interconnections. Global Justice Ecology Project is the North American Focal Point of the Global Forest Coalition.

"Out of an abundance of fear of being called socialist, local governments shy away from long term planning of and the direct influencing of the local economy for the benefit of the general good. There is no credible or effective thinking about a community's long term economic survivability or sustainability. The corporate needs or the lack of them sway local governments back and forth in their attempts to copy the latest generic community success with a "silicon valley," a "gambling haven," etc. Small business, the proven greatest job generator is ignored or worse. City budgets are littered with the detritus of past corporate sponsored Federal and State mechanisms intended to capitalize on past, failed corporate trends, fashions, and tastes-of-the-month that harnessed local government for other than the communities best interest. Wilson will trace some of this detritus."

Green Sunday, June 12th, 5 - 6:30 pm A Brief History of Nuclear Mayhem and the Environmental Consequences of the Past 70 Years We will be presenting a general overview of how nuclear power works, it's actual carbon footprint and cost and the many nuclear disasters resulting from it's relatively brief history. Fukushima is just the latest catastrophe and in a technologically advanced country, which begs the question, "Is there safe nuclear power?" The waste from these plants becomes a problem for hundreds of thousands of years. We will explain why and the extraordinary measures needed to safeguard this material. We will also highlight a few actions that people can take to oppose nuclear power, especially some related to the two existing California nuclear plants. Our presenter, Dave Heller, has been an active Green Party member for over a decade, and is a current member of our County Council. He was our most recent local candidate for U.S. Congress, and in 2004 served as the Campaign Coordinator for Berkeley's "Instant Runoff Voting" campaign (Measure I).
